Re: Reclast Side Effects

My Dr. had recommended that I take Reclast for about 6 months before I acquiesced. I took Reclast on the Tuesday before we left on our great Alaska adventure the following Monday. I had noticed that I wasn't urinating as much, but I wasn't especially symptomatic, except for being tired and having a bit more than the usual shortness of breath. We flew to Anchorage and were there for only about a day and a half before I told my husband to take me to the E.R. I had all the signs of congestive heart failure. My chest x-ray was a mess. (The E.R. physician told me, if you could see it, you'd be impressed!) I was hospitalized for 11 days of our 14 day vacation and placed on 100% oxygen at 90L/minute. I remain on oxygen and can't seem to get my oxygen saturation back up past 91% on room air, where my O2 sats. were 97-100% prior to taking the Reclast. I suspect this resulted from Reclast taxing my kidneys which made the fluid back up to my lungs. I've never had any sort of heart problems. I have been a registered nurse for 25 years and I certainly don't consider my patients "guinea pigs" as one individual has suggested. I cared very much for the patients I was assigned to. Unfortunately, there are side-effects of medications and one has to consider the benefits versus the risks. Will I ever take Reclast again? Absolutely not. I also know that Reclast is a positive choice for many who take it, but I don't fit into that category, unfortunately. Don't know what I'll do about the osteopenia (had a fracture from standing height and I'm on prednisone.) but I don't want to ever have to go through that experience again.
