Scarring Alopecia and Levothyroxine
I had a thyroid gland removed 30 years ago and have been on levothyroxine (1mg) since. I did not have any hair loss issues. A year or so ago my physician prescribed me 1.5 mg and 6 months ago I experienced the excessive hair loss. I scheduled 2 appointments with my physician but he didn't believe me and told me that I am spending too much time on the internet searching for connection between thyroid problems and hair loss. Approximately 4 months ago I started to have bold patches which I couldn't hide anymore and I started to wear a wig. My physician was shocked when I paid him a visit and finally sent me to see a dermatologist who performed a biopsy. The results came back and I was diagnosed with scarring alopecia. I'm wandering if the alopecia was triggered by excessive levothyroxine medication. My physician also prescribed me the lower dosage of levothyroxine (1.25 mg) and after getting my blood test results decreased the dosage to 1.12 mg. I don't know if that dosage is still to high.
