two years ago I was in the hospital and they gave me this drug to treat a uti. I only took it for three days but six months to a year later I began having numbness in my hands and feet along with nerve damage in my foot. The nerve damage was in the form of tingling, strange pulsating sensations, needles and pins sensation. I went to the doctor and they made no connection between this medication and these strange symptoms. Then last April I was back in the ER with flu like symptoms the prescribed nitrofurantoin but I was never informed of the risks for taking this medication. Within two days of treatment I began experience shortness of breath, headaches, fever and severe depression. I returned to the same ER with these new symptoms and still they never associated these new problems with being serious side effects of Nitrofurantoin. Then three months later and my fifth time back in the ER due to these symptoms finally they did an x ray of my chest and discovered lung damage and a lung nodule that wasn't seen when compared to an xray of my lungs from two years prior. This medication is poison and should not be used on humans. It has destroyed my health. And its been impossible so far to be helped as far as combatting these serious health issues I now have as a result of taking this drug. I am so mad at myself for not questioning my doctors choice of prescribing me this medication. And I blame my doctor for not recognizing my symptoms as being rare but very serious side effects of this drug. They should have realized what was happening and immediately had me taken off this poisonous drug. I have still not been treated with anything to halt these side effects. Its been 8 months since I was on this medication and I'm still feeling its poisonous results. I was put on this medication two separate times. The first time it only took three days to cause damage but the damage didn't become symptoms for close to a year after taking it. But the second time I took it the side effects were almost immediately felt only they were totally different and manifested in different ways. However to date I have suffered nerve damage to my hands and feet, head aches, lung damage and breathing difficulties, depression and other psychological damage. This drug is not fit for humans and it was not even effective in treating or curing the uti. What if anything can be done as far as stopping the use of this drug before it harms someone else? What can I and others like myself who have suffered and are still suffering serious health issues, what help is available to us? This is a very dangerous drug.
