My husband is 67 years of age, non-smoker, non-drinker, is 6 ft tall and weights 192 lbs. He has always been active and worked hard. A couple of years ago, he began having severe pain in his left shoulder and we thought he had overworked it but the pain went on for a year and a half. We began checking his medications and discovered that he was on an extremely high dosage of niacin and that niacin can cause muscle damage. He quit taking the Niacin and his shoulder seemed to get better. Now about a month ago, he began having pain in his right shoulder. He then began to hurt in his leg muscles to the point where he could barely walk. The muscles do not hurt to touch but hurt when he walks. He cannot raise his right arm above his waist. He had been taking Trilipix for about 2 and a half years for high triglycerides and they changed him to a generic on May 5th. He went to his doctor and was put on Prednisone. After the first day, it was like a miracle he had no pain. Unfortunately after he finished the Prednisone the pain came back as if it had never been treated. The doctor ordered blood and urine tests to rule out rhabdomylosis and it came back negative. Then he ordered several more tests and the only ones that came back elevated was a c-reactive protein which was 70.6 and the neutrophil was elevated. His doctor is going to refer him to a rheumatologist. My husband has had triglycerides as high as 2400 at one time and the Trilipix is the only drug that has ever brought it down. It was 147 the last time. Also he has had low platelet counts in the past and they are now 115. If it gets below 70 he has to go for a bone marrow test. Has anybody had a problem such as this?
